Parasitology Research and Scholarly Activity

For the past thirty five years, the Janovy lab has focused on problems of parasite population and community structure, host specificity, life cycle evolution, and taxonomy. We have worked primarily with small fish and invertebrate hosts; the parasites were mainly apicomplexans, particularly septate gregarines, but we also dealt with parasite communities of small fish. The research group typically included undergraduates as well as graduates; most years there were 2-3 graduate students and 2-4 undergraduates doing research in my lab. Our field sites were mainly in western Nebraska, near the Cedar Point Biological Station north of Ogallala, NE, in the Salt Valley watershed north and west of Lincoln, and in Cass County east of Lincoln. I retired in August, 2011, but there are still three undergraduates finishing up their honors thesis projects, mainly doing the writing, statistical analysis, etc.

The links below are to research-related items, including recent papers and presentations at regional scientific meetings.

NEWS: In April, 2011, several students from UNL attended the Southwestern Association of Parasitologists meetings at Lake Texoma, University of Oklahoma Biological Station, and four of the undergrads presented.

TERRIFIC NEWS: On April 22, 2010, Gabe Langford successfully defended his dissertation and is now Dr. Gabriel Langford! (He's also headed toward a job at Florida Southern College in Lakeland--with lots of aquatic habitat, and presumably lots of frogs, too, nearby!)

MORE TERRIFIC NEWS: Alaine Knipes defended her dissertation in July, 2010, and promptly left for Africa, to teach parasitology and do research in Zambia. Wow! Now that's some adventure!!
